CLARENCE GLANUS
Clarence Ganus was an Alabama-born singer and guitarist who recorded for Vocalion between 1928 and 1930, both as a solo artist and with his brother Claude Ganus. Although his recording career was brief, his performances display a confident blend of traditional country songs, sentimental ballads and gospel music. His relaxed singing and solid guitar accompaniment make him a fine representative of the early hillbilly style that flourished during the final years of the acoustic era and the beginning of electrical recording.

"Down in Indiana" is a light-hearted sentimental song celebrating the American Midwest and the familiar themes of home and romance. Clarence Ganus delivers the piece with an easy, conversational vocal style supported by a lively fingerpicked guitar accompaniment. While not among the best-known recordings of the period, it is an excellent example of the straightforward yet effective solo guitar style heard on many commercial country recordings of the late 1920s.
