HOKE RICE
Hoke Rice was a Georgia singer, guitarist and songwriter active during the late 1920s and 1930s. Although he recorded only a small number of titles, his performances blend blues, sentimental songs and early country music, revealing the strong influence of Jimmie Rodgers while retaining a distinctive Southern style. Some of his recordings were reissued under the pseudonym C. Maines, a common marketing practice among budget record labels of the period.

"Unexplained Blues" is a country blues built around a relaxed vocal performance and confident guitar accompaniment. Recorded at Gennett's Richmond studio, the song reflects the close relationship between blues and early hillbilly music at the end of the 1920s. Although originally issued under Hoke Rice's own name, it later appeared on Challenge records under the pseudonym C. Maines.
