NEWTON GAINES
Newton Gaines (1890–1963) was a professor of physics at Texas Christian University, as well as a folklorist and collector of traditional songs. Closely associated with John A. Lomax and the Texas Folklore Society, he recorded a small group of cowboy and folk songs for Victor during the company's 1929 field sessions in Dallas. Accompanying himself on guitar, Gaines preserved traditional Texas repertoire with a straightforward, unadorned style that reflects his interest in documenting regional folk music rather than pursuing a professional performing career.
